Scale Pattern Notes in C

How It Works

What Is a Musical Scale?

A musical scale is an ordered set of notes defined by a pattern of intervals (distances between notes). Starting from any root note, applying the interval pattern produces all the notes in that scale. The most common interval unit is a semitone (half step) — the smallest distance between two notes in Western music.

Interval Patterns

Scales are built from sequences of whole steps (W = 2 semitones) and half steps (H = 1 semitone). For example, the major scale follows the pattern W W H W W W H, producing the familiar Do-Re-Mi sound.

Scale Degrees

Each note in a scale has a degree number (1st through 7th for seven-note scales). The 1st degree is the root (tonic). Each degree has an interval name relative to the root: unison, major 2nd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, major 6th, major 7th. Alterations produce minor, diminished, or augmented intervals.

Modes

A mode is a rotation of a scale — starting the same set of notes from a different degree. The seven modes of the major scale are: Ionian (1st), Dorian (2nd), Phrygian (3rd), Lydian (4th), Mixolydian (5th), Aeolian (6th), and Locrian (7th). Each mode has a unique sound character due to its interval pattern.

Audio Playback

This tool uses the Web Audio API to generate tones. Each note is synthesized as a sine wave at the correct frequency based on equal temperament tuning (A4 = 440 Hz). The scale is played ascending from the root note in the 4th octave.
